Happy New Year 2012

This is your year!

Every year at this time, I like to sit back and reflect on the past 12 months--Business-wise and personally. There are mistakes we've made, high-5's we've given, some heartaches, stresses and moments of being so starnkin' thankful that we were speechless.

As some of you know, 2011 was my "Yes" year. I have no regrets. The opportunities that were given to me, the incredibly talented people I've had a chance to work with this year & the crazy traveling, has been a wacky beautiful whirlwind. Stressful? Oh yeah! But worth it.

This year KAZA has:
-Designed a Moroccan Room for Red River Theatre
-Designed some windows for a shop in Manchester
-Made inventory for other shops
-Had our Eiffel Towers included in a photo shoot for a bridal magazine
-Helped several artisans in creating their brand
...and so much more...so much more.

On a personal note, the list is a bit more painful, even more traveling & much wackier (including a very recent verbal disagreement, about design, with a member of the Kennedy family-lol--don't ask)

I could never recommend a "yes" year without first trying it out for myself. Did I love the "yes" year? Not always. But, the experiences I've had in this one year outweigh any negative feelings. Life does not give us 2nd chances nor does it slow down for us to be ready. Opportunities that you don't feel ready for. You are more ready than you think.

Look at 2012 as the year you just go for it--no matter what. And, well... if the world ends, as the Mayans predict, then you only have 11 months of "yeses" to do! :o)

Christmas Breakfast

Baked French Toast

This recipe can quickly be made Christmas Eve, while the kids are asleep and when you wake you wake up Christmas morning, pop it in the oven and enjoy a cozy Christmas breakfast!

When I was a little girl, my belle Maman would surprise us occasionally with a delicious breakfast of baked french toast. We always knew it was coming because we would see the bread "marinating" the night before. I would dream about having a corner piece. You know the one I'm talking about--the one with the crispy bits. I swear I would fall asleep with a crazy smile on my face. Now it's my turn to make it and wanted to share it with you, Bella's-- so you can make your own memories with it. Your kids will remember and think how fabulous you are.

FYI: Wear an apron. It adds to the ooey-gooey visual memory. ;o) xox

Ingredients

1 loaf French bread / Baguette
8 large eggs
2 cups half-and-half
1 cup milk
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
a tiny bit of salt

*3/4 cup chopped pecans (optional)

Directions

Slice French bread into, 1-inch slices. Arrange slices in a buttered 9 by 13-inch flat baking dish, overlapping slices. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, half-and-half, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt and beat with a rotary beater or whisk until blended but not too bubbly. Pour mixture over the bread slices, making sure all are covered evenly with the milk-egg mixture.

*Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.

Good Morning, Bella's!

(The next day)preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Scatter some chopped pecans over French Toast (optional)
Bake for 40 minutes, until puffed and lightly golden. Serve with maple syrup.

What's New Pussycats?

Autumn is here, Bella's!!

But what is with all this rain?? 'Tis crampin my style (not to mention suddenly giving me very curly french poodle bangs!). It's hard to run with furniture in the rain, but we managed to get two windows changed, an Autumn shop reconfiguration & new products into the door--Yipppeee!

Ok...so here goes:

Window 1:

French Harvest. Linen pillows, wicker bowls & baskets,dried magnolia leaves, vintage industrial lightbulbs, old spool of soft baling twine, cotton bud garland, antique piece of sheer lace. I love this window. Something about it triggers something in my soul and makes me calm. The bench is made from a headboard/footboard set and is painted a gorgeous grey-green. Now this colour is my new obsession. I found an old french dresser that had only one drawer and was unusable, but the colour was insane! So, I took it to the paint store and had them match it with their handy-dandy matching machine to create the exact recipe to recreate the colour and voila! I want to paint everything this colour, these days-but I need to pace myself. The one positive thing is that everything I paint in this colour flies out the door, so no one gets a chance to really tire of it anyway!-lol

Window II:

Haute Harvest. Funky. Whimsical. Playful. Eclectic. The palette of creme, black & yellow is perfect for Autumn. The danish modern chair is a vintage piece that has been reupholstered in a fabulous vintage-y floral pattern. The old crate on the side brings it back down to earth. Pillows, pillows, pillows!, The backdrop of embroidery hoops painted black with black crows randomly resting throughout is as spooky as we go this year. The vintage black phone (remember those?!) is a must have! AND....the chalkboard dressform-- FABULOUUUSS! (in my best Oprah voice). Always fun to the Autumn windows! :o)

KAZA Chats With Stylist, Matthew Mead

A little insight into Matthew Meads' World

As most of you know, when I came to Concord, NH I didn't know one person in this town. Opening a shop without a core of supporters was probably one of the wackiest things I have ever done (but am so glad I did--you guys are awesome!).

Four years ago, during my first month, a popular Stylist walked into KAZA. He did not introduce himself but spoke to me a little bit about the shop then left (living under a very comfortable rock, I didn't know who he was at that time). The following weeks, the shop had all new faces--and each one said, "Matthew Mead sent me here. He said I should check it out and that he wants you to make it".

Mr. Mead is known for supporting local businesses. For me, he was like a little angel, bringing people to KAZA based on his highly established recommendation. That level of recommendation would have taken me years to build and I am so thankful.

So it is with great honour to do this interview with him - Enjoy!

KAZA's Interview with Matthew Mead:

Matthew, what a gorgeous book! I especially love how each page eases into the next; there is nothing jarring and the colour palettes are very soothing to the eye. How long does it typically take you to produce a book, as this, from start to finish?

Matthew Mead: Usually two to three months of pretty intense producing and photographing. I love color and creating color stories and collecting props in degrees of one color...I love that you are atune to the colors and progressions because it is all very intentional.

Tell me how you came to decide on the cover:

Matthew Mead: Covers to me should be that thing that evokes the feeling of the season. And I also like the item to be something not typically seen on a cover. It should also be the magazine that you want displayed on your coffee table or on the top of the stack of what you are reading...

We spoke a bit at KAZA and you had mentioned that you had already completed your Autumn 2011 book and are already almost completed with your Christmas 2011 book, which is so exciting (and also means you have been incredibly busy!). What other projects are you working on?

Matthew Mead: I have those two magazines ready to hit in the next two months....and a beautiful product line and e-commerce site ready in the next months. There will be videos, DIY info and lots of glimpses into my prop room and collections...real behind the scenes.

A while back, we talked about the realities of the business; a lot of smoke 'n mirrors,tons of hard work, schlepping furniture in the rain (and snow!), paint stains, all of the planning ahead for each design & running around, etc. --What side of the business just makes it all worth it, for you?

Matthew Mead: I wake up everyday and life has a clean palette, so that I can mix up something new just for that day...I certainly have long term products but have now been able to steer my own ship which is so gratifying. But there s nothing so great as relating with others about design, decor, collecting, entertaining...I am ripe to learn all the time, so I guess being out in the community and experiencing new ideas and perspectives is at the top of the list.

Matthew Mead Productions Inc in 5 years will be....:

Matthew Mead: My goal is for the magazine to be a rich and diverse seasonal magazine with lots of voices. Also, I hope to really grow my product line, which is inspired by my favorite collectibles, to be something that is ever changing and evolving. I don't need to be a mega corporation. I would like my efforts to be healthy & successful, but come from a place of happiness and nature...to unfold, organically.

One of the most asked about questions, is about your decision to leave Flea Market Style Magazine. Could we touch on this subject, a bit?

Matthew Mead: Sure...my goal is always to do something that is creative and interesting, inspiring and beautiful and to break a lot of the rules that go with main stream publishing. While enjoyed my work with FMS (Flea Market Style), I was retrained from spreading my wings and bringing readers exactly what I love and know they want. I am not interested in rehashing the past, but moving forward with many, many different styles of decorating and bringing the reader many different voices from around the world. Doing my own thing really allows me to soar. And worry not...my Spring issue is titles "Flea Market Finds with Matthew Mead" and will sate the appetite for all of my Flea Market Followers!

Whats up at KAZA, you ask?

A whole lotta lotta!

We received a batch of Earthway's "Summer Home" line. As many of you know, Mary & I worked together for a long time, trying to find the "right" beach scent (actually, Mary worked hard, I just sniffed her concoctions and said, "mmmm...not quite. More coconut!"-lol). But she has captured it perfectly! Close your eyes when smelling it and you'll reopen your eyes with sand in your shoes! (Ok, not really...but you will definitely feel you went to the beach for the day sans sunburn) :o)

Well, they will be short-lived, unfortunately--everything just sold within 3 hours of opening today! But I wanted to show you before they emptied out (thanks to all the awesome customers that allowed me 1 1/2 weeks to design for the next windows!) *PHEWWW!*

The cedar chest was handstamped with the John Masefield Poem "Sea Fever":

Happy Bastille Day!

How about a Croque Monsieur for lunch?

(*photo taken in Paris cafe last August --it was delicious!*)

Croque Monsieur recipe from: The Barefoot Contessa

Ingredients

2 tablespoons unsalted butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups hot milk
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Pinch nutmeg
12 ounces Gruyere, grated (5 cups)
1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan
16 slices white sandwich bread, crusts removed
Dijon mustard
8 ounces baked Virginia ham, sliced but not paper thin

Directions

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Melt the butter over low heat in a small saucepan and add the flour all at once, stirring with a wooden spoon for 2 minutes. Slowly pour the hot milk into the butter–flour mixture and cook, whisking constantly, until the sauce is thickened. Off the heat add the salt, pepper, nutmeg, 1/2 cup grated Gruyere, and the Parmesan and set aside.

To toast the bread, place the slices on 2 baking sheets and bake for 5 minutes. Turn each slice and bake for another 2 minutes, until toasted.

Lightly brush half the toasted breads with mustard, add a slice of ham to each, and sprinkle with half the remaining Gruyere. Top with another piece of toasted bread. Slather the tops with the cheese sauce, sprinkle with the remaining Gruyere, and bake the sandwiches for 5 minutes. Turn on the broiler and broil for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the topping is bubbly and lightly browned. Serve hot.

I have met such amazing people since being here 4 years ago. Not know 1 single person in Concord, you all have been such an incredible & loving support system.

Summer Time, Summer Time...

...Sum-Sum-Summer Time!

(my sweet escape;the family lake in Coaticook, Canada--my grandpapa built that lake!)

First off, Phew! The Marche Aux Puce is done for 2011!!

It was a great success and we were able to make a dent in the warehouse. But...Holy Guacamole, I am eyeballs-down-to-my-ankles, tired. It was a wacky whirlwind, but you got to love an event that helps reconfigure the space, eh? :o)

Thank you a million times for your support in making our events "a happenin' gig" (I don't really know exactly what that means...but I heard it somewhere and it sounded good-lol).

This time of year is my favourite time. I just cannot be outside enough, during the summer. And it is the time of year I get to visit Canada and family. As many of you know, this year has been very difficult because of my fathers health. I've spent alot of time trying to remember certain special memories. Sometimes the memories are not so clear...but coming here, makes them more clear. The thing I love about this land is that it looks the same from my childhood. Yeah, some trees have grown a bit. But the walk...looks the same. The sweet pink apples that fall in September smell the same. During these quiet walks, I hear my grandpapa's whistle...or my grandmaman's sweet laugh. I see my Memere cutting dandelions for salads, Elvis music playing during happy times, Mireille Mathieu during sad times. I am a little girl here forever. So...in short, Summer makes me sappy-lol

(Whenever I go for a walk there, I return to the house and just turn around for another walk. The air is sweet and addictive)

So, in thinking of family times, Happy Canada & USA Independence Day! Enjoy this long weekend with your families & make memories! "It's All About The Dress"

The very talented Artist, Cathy Steele was generous enough to answer a few questions that was on our pumpkins--read below and see what is behind the dress!

Q: "It's All About The Dress" is such a unique series. What gave you the inspiration to start a series of dresses?

Growing up, I dreamed of someday opening a small dress shop with one of a kind fashions. As an artist, I decided I could paint those dresses, and they could be anything that I wanted. I began by sketching out dress designs, and then I created “Cally Marie”, my "muse & model". My art teacher had once suggested painting with acrylics on watercolor paper as opposed to canvas, and I thought that would be perfect for this project.

Q. Who inspires you, artistically?

I have always loved Monet and Cheri Blum, but I also love Jackson Pollock, and I can name at least a dozen local artists in New Hampshire who inspire me to push myself to the next level on a daily basis. But I think my biggest influence was my mother. She was never able to go to art school as she had wanted, raising nine children instead. She was an artist, painting in acrylics, in pastels, and sketching. I was always mesmerized at how naturally it came to her. She inspired me to not only become an artist, but to create pieces that mean something both to me as an artist, and to whomever may see or buy them.

Q. There is an innocence to your pieces as well as a strong confidence. Was finding the subject a process of trial & errors or was it something that just happened naturally?

I did quite a few rough sketches of faces, and dresses, and shoes. But, I found designing the dresses to be so much fun, that it did seem effortless. As soon as I drew “Cally Marie” the way that you see her in the series, I knew that was exactly how she should look. From there, everything just seemed to fall into place. I began painting the dress fronts, and drawing the backs of the dresses in ink. I decided to tear the edges of the paper and place both pieces on a simple black background. And, since the front of each dress is painted very simply, I let the back of the dress have a stronger presence with more detail.

Q. The series of 8 you have displayed at KAZA right now, are that of the first series. What plans do you have for the second series; will it remain a framed art or will you take it in another direction?

I am currently working on the first four dresses of my next series. I plan to have” Series Two” completed sometime early this summer, and although it will be similar, each series and every dress will always be unique. I also have a small series of shoe designs drawn in ink that I put in small purse frames. The “Cally Marie Designs” line is something that I plan to continue to focus on, and I think the possibilities for original artistic pieces are limitless.

I hope that others will enjoy “It’s All About the Dress” as much as I enjoyed creating it. My thanks to local artist and teacher Kim Roth who encouraged me to pursue my concept for this series.

Bonjour Mes Belles!

I just returned from Florida and was busy, busy, busy! But I did get a chance to bring home some fun things!

Like....
Sponges from Tarpon Springs! This place is like "Little Greece"--Baklava everywhere! They had Baklava Cheesecake too, but I was a good girl(ish) and only had plain Baklava(as much as Baklava can be plain, right?-lol).

I brought some Greek soaps from there too! Now these smell like Turkish soaps in my opinion. I have been hunting for this smell for so long. A few years ago, I had taken a Turkish felted rug making class and the teacher, Mehmet, was selling these blocks of soap. I could never find them again. I L-O-V-E the smell! Earthy & dimensional--it draws me in. Just something about it. And now I can smell it ALL day! :o)

What else? Ah yes...I went to Pier 60 in Clearwater Beach and they were selling these pieces of rock with oil inside to light as a candle. There is something so sexy about rocks and fire, don't you think?

Ohhhh....from sexy to completely girly-girl, I hunted like a wild woman for Audrey Hepburn/ Jackie O style vintage purses!! Well...y'all were asking to buy my vintage purse, every time I had it on my desk. So, I knew I had to find some equally as fabulous! And you know what? I did! I seriously heard angels singing on several of these purse (15 total!)! Ahhhhhh (Angels singing)

I also bought some fabulous lamps....ummmm...fabulous lamps, but they will have to wait a bit before they arrive to KAZA. Insanely mod and oh-so fabulous! Can't wait until they get here!

FYI: Another thing I brought was the sunshine (you're welcome, Bella's! xox). If the weather gets a little grey, come and give me a hug--I am chock full of sunshine right now(VERY red & sunburned!)-lol- don't squeeze too hard though...I might cry xox

While in Florida, I ate at a place called Yanny's and wrote about it on my other blog. Hhhmmmmm....what other blog?! Well...y'all know I cannot cook to save anyone's life right? So...I started working on a food blog. I have been cooking with natural ingredients, as much as possible...and writing about it a bit. At this point there are no recipes, just my experiences and the name of the cookbooks. Sometimes, it is an experience at a restaurant that I really liked. Trying to figure out the direction I want to go with it, at this point (it is VERY new).... Awww...heck, quit tugging at my apron, if you are really curious, it is here. The concept is a bit naughty...but...lol...I am kinda naughty too, aren't I?

I am also working on project tutorials on the KAZA LOVES DESIGN blog and will let you know when things are up and running on that one, as well. Kind of changing things around a bit, adding a little salt & pepper here and there...just keeping things interesting, Bella's! xox

As you know KAZA was asked to do a couple of businesses in downtown Manchester. I finished one before I left for Florida and if you drive by, you will know exactly which windows they are--VERY KAZA! The one that is finished is "Good Times" and I am working on the other one, "Karma".

KAZA was also asked to design the Casablanca Room For Red River Theatres upcoming event on 21 May 2011! I am looking forward to visiting the space and getting to work (not much time, but I think it will be super fun!).

***One more important thing: I just heard today that the Friendly Kitchen in Concord, NH burned down. This is devastating to the people that relied that as their source for food in their tummies. Next week, KAZA will be donating 20% of all sales to the Friendly Kitchen. Spade also said that they will donate 25% of all their sales at KAZA to the Friendly Kitchen, as well (so get those Mother's Day Flowers tomorrow and help a good cause, as well!). I know Butters, Little River Rugs & Stoneyfield Farm are also contributing to this very important cause***

Where do I begin...?

I've missed you! I hope you are all well and are loving this new yellow thing in the sky. It seems friendly and warm and I am hoping it stays around alot longer! :o)

So much has happened this month, it is wacky and I can't wait to tell you about it!

We finished up the news windows and it's all about the blue butterfly this month! Not only are they in the window flying around KAZA's Tallulah---we were also asked to make a blue butterfly crown for Butter's Food & Wine "Tallulah" (the cow in the window!), right here in Concord! Check out the "Tallulah's"....they look fabulous!

Speaking of windows:
As I mentioned above, the window on the left is KAZA's "Tallulah" surrounded by her own swarm of butterflies. Our fabulous shopgirl, Julianne, helped me with this one this morning and ....I think she is over the butterfly thing (or over me!-lol). My job was to point (always is), while her job was to figure out what my crooked finger was pointing at-lol.

We have some new creme from Earthway, by the way--it smells so amazing! Isn't her new packaging beautiful? She was recently featured in Concord Insider and gave a little shout out KAZA (Thanks Mary & Congratulations! xox)

Well Bella's, in the beginning of 2011, I decided this would be my "yes" year. I know, I know...it did take me a long time to get to this place. It's alot easier to let people judge KAZA--it is less personal. But, when Lisa is the one to be judged...I am 100% scaredy cat. So...with my new promise to myself; people have been asking...and I have been saying "YES"! "Yes" to Butter's "Tallulah" crown. "Yes" to window designs in 2 different shops in Downtown Manchester. "Yes" to helping a shop in Contoocook reconfigure their space. "Yes" to designing the background for the next Red River Theatre "Oscars" event."Yes" to teaching a one day class in the Fall (GASP!). A few other things in between...and it's only March! Scary stuff to peak out from behind the KAZA curtain and say yes. Wish me luck, Bella's xox

HEE HEE! Did you gasp when you saw the HGTV picture? You probably thought, "Oh she said yes to HGTV?!?!", right-lol? Nah...they didn't ask. But they have started to follow KAZA on Twitter(oy!...Twitter?! who am I?! Who have I become?!? ). KAZA (kazashop) does not have alot of Twitter followers (55 at last count)--but I can tell you, the people that are following are amazing and I am rolling-on-the-floor shocked! HGTV Canada, Designer Debbie Travis, Lonnie Magazine, Este Magazine, Sandra Espinet, Home Accents Today Magazine, House & Home, etc are following our little ol' KAZA! Which means....I will really need to watch the kooky things I say on Twitter or I will scare them all away!-lol (Although...sometimes I just cannot stop myself!-lol) No swollen head here though--I am one of 12,000 people HGTV Canada follow!-lol

So, that is the exciting news right now. Next month will probably be boring--so I need to milk this as much as possible!-lol

BACON JAM!!(Cue Hallelujah choir again please!)

Bacon Jam!

An Original Recipe by Not Quite Nigella

* 1 pound smoked bacon (or use regular bacon and liquid smoke)
* 4 cloves garlic, chopped
* 1 medium brown onion sliced
* 3 tablespoons brown sugar
* Tabasco sauce (according to taste)
* 1 cup coffee
* 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
* 1/4 cup maple syrup
* Black pepper to taste
* extra water

1. In a non stick pan, fry the bacon in batches until lightly browned and beginning to crisp. Using a pair of scissors cut into 1 inch pieces.

2. Fry the onion and garlic in the rendered bacon fat on medium heat until translucent.

3. Transfer the bacon, onion and garlic into a heavy based cast iron pot and add the rest of the ingredients except for the water. Simmer for 2 hours adding 1/4 of a cup of water every 25-30 minutes or so and stirring.

4. When ready, cool for about 15-20 minutes and then place in a food processor. Pulse for 2-3 seconds so that you leave some texture to the “jam” or of course you could keep whizzing and make it a smoother and more paste like.

Enjoy on a piece of crispy baquette ...maybe with a thin slice of fresh buffalo mozzarella and a sprig of baby spinach (ya know...to keep it healthy-lol) ;)

My name is Lisa, owner of KAZA and I'm a Tweetaholic.

Ok...I am so not into these "gadget-y" things and have mentioned to many of you how, between Facebook & Twitter, we are raising a generation of narcissists. Do you remember? I remember when I first joined Twitter, the person I was "Following" (not in a stalker way--in a Twitter way) wrote, "Mowing the lawn". Really? Who cares,right? Buh-bye!

Well...last week, while watching Top Chef All Stars (another guilty pleasure), a contestant mentioned "Follow us for a play-by-play on Twitter". Oy....on Twitter? Really?.

Now, for those of you who did not know....I am obsessed with Top Chef and am not ashamed to say it. I get sweaty palms during every Quick Fire Challenge and try to imagine myself in that same scenario (of course everyone would be getting macaroni & hotdog pieces and I would be sent home immediately-lol).I love watching the Chefs mix ingredients and cut veggies so fast, I swear someone has eaten "Thumb Parmesan" at least once at the judges panel! I laugh with Carla, blush at Fabio and snarl at Marcel (no need anymore--he's gone!hahaha). I LOVE this show. So....when it was mentioned to watch the play by play on Twitter, I did. And you know what? It was soooo fun!

Now...I am addicted. I follow Jimmy Fallon. I follow Rachel Zoe. I follow Dr. Oz. I follow the entire cast of Top Chef (including previous seasons!). Every now and then I comment--trying to stick in a toe to test the waters. Bella's...I am in deep.

A Little "Feel Good" Food

While we are trapped inside our snow castles, I found an amazing recipe in Sweet Paul Magazine that I had to share with y'all! It's Rich. It's Naughty. It's Decadent. And with all this snow and cold weather, it's....forgivable.

Well, what is it?

Amaretto-Baked French Toast with Pecans (cue the hallelujah choir!)

*Cooking in your pj's is best for this recipe*

Serves 4
3 Eggs
1 Cup of milk
3 Tbs of sugar
1 tsp Vanilla Extract
2 Tbs Amaretto (cue the choir again, pls)
1 Loaf brioche bread, cut into 1/2" cubes
1 Tbs butter (for greasing baking dish)
1/2 Cup of Pecans
Maple Syrup, to serve

Preheat Oven to 350F
In a large bowl beat eggs, milk, sugar & amaretto
Add Brioche cubes and let mixture stand (soak) for 5 minutes
Spoon into a 9" x 12" well greased baking dish,
Sprinkle with pecans
Bake for about 15-20 minutes or until golden
Pour maple syrup over bread and serve

Look outside, stick your tongue out and enjoy! :o)

The 2011 KAZA Feel Good Checklist

A New Year=A New You

Get your boots on and lets go for a walk, Bella's--

In the past,I had always dreaded Januaries. With the Holidays over, there was nothing to look forward to for months; just cold weather, more snow and having it get dark at 4:00 in the afternoon.

As women in cold-weathered-winters, we walk around in big clunky boots, big woolen hats that muss the hair, trying to be feminine with a runny nose, a cough that people mistake for a seal and pasty skin. We stop shaving our legs, neglect our cracking feet and hibernate our femininity until Mid-April...sometimes even May.

But I learned that we don't have to! My friend, Sandra (owner of Botany's Desire out in California)gave me some insanely good advice. Make January about taking care of you. It seems so simple, doesn't it? After all the running around for the Holidays, decorating, undecorating, shoveling, taking care of other sniffles in the house...it is time to take a little time to remember who we are.

At KAZA, we are starting 2011 celebrating you...me...us.

It's time for a change. It's time for us to do something different this year. This year, we will embrace January. That's right Bella's, hug the "blue" right out of it! Isn't that wacky that someone from sunny California gets it before we do? (Maybe because we are lacking the Vitamin D to think of such brilliant things, these days!-lol)

First things first; Take care of ourselves!

*Take our vitamins (including Vitamin D!!)

*Drink Tea throughout the day (I heard that tea is the internal healer)

*Stay hydrated (drink lots of water)

*Eat well. In this...(ok, I will just say it) crappy weather, we tend to not want to cook. Fast food is just so.....fast. Believe me, I am so guilty of this (Dragon Star & Applebee's Take-out know my voice now!). But, it is time for me to erase them from my speed-dial and start cooking again. Any good recipes?

*Exercise. If you would have seen my face as I typed that word, you would know it is harder for me to even think it-lol. But, moving increases our blood flow and just makes us feel good (still making that face, but I know it is true).

And dolly garnet, shave those legs! It is the first step before the pampering part. You can't (shouldn't...wouldn't feel right to)pamper yourself with hairy gams.

Next; Pamper ourselves!
Pampering does not need to cost alot or take alot of time. But, for some reason, we just don't do it. But, we feel so fabulous when we do. So...let's just do it! :o)

We just brought in some insanely thick Turkish robes from Denizli, Turkey. These are Hotel quality and are selling very fast (not to worry, we have more coming). At 50$ per robe, it is the perfect first step to feeling pampered.

WARNING: Just don't weigh yourself while wearing these robes. They are so heavy and you will go into a deep depression, thinking you just gained 10lbs.

Facial Steams: Just a little pot of hot water and a tea bag, a towel to create a sort of cave and a 6 minute timer and you will feel like a million bucks!

KAZA also has facial steams available for 5$ (the container is good for 3 steams and contains organic wild mint, raspberry leaves, lavender, rosemary and wild clover)

Facial Cleansers: Mary from Earthway has done it again.

These facial cleansers not only feel incredible on the skin, but they look and smell amazing!

Candles: Just the look of a burning candle makes us feel warmer. Sometimes life is so busy, we forget to take time to light a candle that smells good (just don't be too busy to blow it out when you leave the room!). Or light a tapered candle at breakfast! Who says scrambled eggs and toast do not deserve a little ambiance?

The Artist Behind The KAZA Invitation

Many of you were intrigued by the Artist behind the hauntingly beautiful KAZA invitations for this years, "Soiree de Noel".

The Artist is the fabulous Jennifer Gordon. When I stumbled across Jennifer's work online, I literally almost fell off my chair to learn that she was originally from Manchester, NH! AND she studied at my old school NHIA! How wacky is that, Bella's?!? How wacky is that?!

Her pieces are feminine, sensual, mysterious--haunting. They capture the essence of being a woman; strength, femininity, soft; yet in control. It takes an interesting soul to effect so many people with their Art.

So...what makes Jennifer Gordon tick? I got a chance to find out! :o)

Q: Jennifer, your pieces are extraordinary; they ooze femininity & sensuality. There is darkness that draws people in. What inspired you to move in this direction?

A: I have always been very fascinated by women, throughout history, what it means to be a woman, what it means to be beautiful, what it means to sexy. I am especially draw to the lives of women during certain time periods, mostly during the Victorian Era, Throughout the Edwardian, and into the very beginning of the 1920’s. This time period has always fascinated me because of the repression of sexuality during these years. The women that chose to make their lives as dancers, actresses, and showgirls were often ostracized. During my research of many of these women I found that many of them had very short and tragic lives. I must say I find a very compelling beauty in that darkness, and that is what I like to explore in my collage work, those hidden stories and themes.

Q: You studied at the New Hampshire Institute of Art (NHIA) in Manchester. Had you majored in Graphic Design?

A:I actually studied acting at NHIA, as for a short while they had a very wonderful acting program spear headed by the very talented Bob Shea, who was the artistic director at the Palace Theater in Manchester for many years, as well as the founder of the Theater Company that had its home at NHIA for several years, which was called New Art Theatre. I was lucky enough in my time there to work with the company and study with wonderful actors. I also fell in love with the entire environment there, it definitely inspired me to do more collage work as a hobby, as it was always something I loved to do….to create visual poems. It was only after I moved away from NH that I started to concentrate on art more seriously and actually try to make a living off of it.

Q: Who influences your Art?

A:The things I mentioned before very much inspire me, I of course am also completely in love with theater, and dance (I actually study ballroom dance in any spare time I have). I also love vintage fashion, circus performers, the steam punk genre, silent film stars, boudoir dolls, belly dancers, and showgirls.

Q: Your business, Stiletto Heights, has quite the following! What other areas of Art do you wish to delve into in the near future?

A:I would like to dance more, because I am very passionate about it. I would like to find time to write more, both poetry as well as fiction, and I say this every year as my new year’s resolution, and that is I want to draw more, I love to draw though I admit I am not very good at it, so each thing takes quite a while, so every year I swear to myself that I will make more time for drawing and then the year goes by and it has not happened, but this year I will try extra, extra hard to make that happen.

As long as you continue doing what you are doing, Jennifer--you can dip your toes in anything you want. :o)

Me?!? I have been sitting with my earplugs, refusing to let go of the summer sweetness. But alas, the earplugs must be removed and I must accept....*gulp*...winter.

Every year, y'all hear me whinin' about winter, blah blah blah...I know, I know.

These were actually fun to make. I will not lie, my fingers still hurt from cutting so many snowflakes. Ok, that was a lie --my daughter cut most of them. But the planning was brutal (again...not really). The Snowflake Tree Window was from a dream I had that woke me up at 2:34am and had me scrambling for paper in the dark (For Real!). I love it! It looks like a lace tree, but is actually made with cut paper doilies! Cool, eh?

Artist Reception For Eli Goodwin!

Everyone who comes in, mentions Eli's photography. He captures moments, that we all wish we could capture. I have been able to get to know Eli a bit while working together and what a nice and incredibly interesting Man. It really has been such a pleasure working with him.

A little message from Eli:

I love finding myself out in Nature and getting lost in it. Time stops: Peace coexists with a certain intensity of awareness. Nature in the broadest sense includes everything: a person, a leaf, a reflection. Anything from dramatic vistas to quite ordinary places may be visually compelling to me. The instant I choose to photograph remains an inspired moment for me---it frames my life for good.

I am intrigued that whatever I encounter will never again appear exactly as I find it. There is always visual magic waiting to be noticed.

I don't "capture" pictures. There is a working relationship between Nature and me---and between me and the camera, once Nature and I agree. A third essential element is the implicit participation of the viewer.

My art is both solitary and communal. At heart, I haven't changed from the little boy who wants to say to a friend, "Hey, look here!"
I want these images to do more--and less than--speak for themselves. I invite you to eavesdrop on my conversation with nature and perhaps, stimulate your own; to explore the essence of the seen, the sense of how it looks "right now".

Pumpkins, Cornstalks and...Lightbulbs?!?

Happy October, Bella's (and Bello's)!

We finished the windows last week--yipppeeee! I think those were the longest windows KAZA has ever had (almost 2 months!). Thanks for being so patient! xox

Okay...straight to business!

First window reminds me of a scarecrow. So we will call that window....mmmm... "Autumn Garden". The "Autumn Garden" window is warmly funky. The sage distressed antique dresser is fabulous. The top is left in its original wood with a bit of wax rubbed in to soften the edges. It is topped off with a massive wicker bowl that can also be hung to display. The old french chair was reupholstered in a burlap ruffle made by an old coffee bag.

The dead tree with the black crows is an idea from a dear friend (Thanks Judy!) and so perfect for an inexpensive, spooky but not an over-the-top scary (coffins, tombstones, etc) Halloween decorating idea. On the wall, "Boo!" written on a chalkboard--made from an old dresser mirror frame! Lighting? A ball of rusted old barbed wire, of course!

The second window is quite fabulous and is my favourite! I call it "Dinner For The Dead". The light bulb chandelier has bits of moss and rosemary and the light bulbs are hung from an at various lengths on an embroidery hoop (two things I love!)-

this makes for an easy and inexpensive terrarium garden, eh? The old frames are hung and inside old pictures turned negative (Printshop lets us do this!)and it looks really spooky!

Some things in the shop that need to be mentioned:

Local Artisan, Sharon Cloud brought over her new line of parfum, lotion and soap called, "Bee". It is a soft scent with lavender & chamomile for relaxation. Neroli & Geranium-alleviate stress. Rose & Ylang-Ylang for emotional uplifting and pink grapefruit!

There is a very colourful piece in the shop that alot of people have been talking about. It is a piece of art, really. A functioning piece of art by Saad. Saad is an Artist from Iraq who now lives in Concord!

Very talented and sweet person --his pieces each tell a story; heartache, love, happiness, despair....he expresses his emotions through his art beautifully and we are very happy to display his art here.

Another new artisan is Abigail Joy. Her button jewelry has been making everyone smile. There is something very light about her pieces and in meeting Abigail, you would understand why. She is always smiling and happy (Joy!), but is also a strong business woman with a strong sense of what her style is. I was very impressed by this, actually. Look out for her in the future---I am very interested to see where she takes this!

Happy Sum-tumn!

Bonjour Faithful KAZA Subscribers!~

This time of year is truly my favourite. The in-between-point before Summer comes to an end and Autumn officially begins.

It is truly the best of two worlds! We can still mow our grass and have barbequed dinners without having mosquitoes attacking us. We can still take weekends away and go to the beach after work.... and since we are entering the new season, we can now wear our yummy sweaters to the beach and everything smells "pumpkin-y" everywhere we go.

My sweet escape from life--the back view from my parents home in Canada (My grandfather built that lake!)

After our wonderful trip overseas, it's nice to be back to this beautiful Country. We did bring some goodies back from a Marche Aux Puce that was being held under the Pont Alexandre III, in Paris. Even though much has already been scooped up, there are still some fabulous things available with the little tag indicating it was a "Marche Aux Puce Find".

Poetic Table--love this! We stamped each letter (with a hammer!) to write the poem by the late Jane Kenyon, of New Hampshire; Finding A Long Grey Hair. Something about Jane's writing really moves me and I was talking to Artist, Gail Smuda about Jane Kenyon's poetry the other day and she mention this poem, specifically.

It reads:

I scrub the long floorboards
in the kitchen, repeating
the motions of other women
who have lived in this house.
And when I find a long grey hair
floating in the pail,
I feel my life added to theirs.

Speaking of Gail Smuda, she recently brought in these fabulous felted bracelets and I loved them!

I love having them in the shop. They make me feel artsy, (without the fartsy). The fabulous bracelets are only $17.50 each!

Gail actually has a show at the Derryfield School, Lyceum Gallery in Manchester called Text & Textiles along with the fabulously talented Laura Morrison. ---2 September - 15 October 2010 with a Reception this Friday night (24 September) from 5pm - 7pm! Check it out!

Speaking of Artists and Receptions (always a segway, eh?), many of you have mentioned how you really like the new photographs on the wall, here at KAZA. He is the very talented (and local) Artist, Eli Goodwin. I will post more about him very soon but I will mention how interesting his pieces are. There is no photoshopping with this artist, he just has amazing patience and timing. Sometimes we pass through life and are so busy we miss half of it. Talking to Eli, he has seen it. He has absorbed it. He has appreciated the small, unnoticed details that we pass by in everyday life. Whenever I see an amazing sunset or a moment I wished I had my camera, I always say, "ahhh....I guess I will just have to wait until I get to heaven to see it again"---but Eli captures moments like those. Do you get it? Isn't that cool? Come check them out and you will totally know what I am talking about.

Getting ready to change windows---and will write again when they are finished!

In the meantime, enjoy your "Sum-tumn", have a barbeque, mow your lawn, instead of going home after work spend a late afternoon at the seaside and watch the sun set (don't forget your hot cocoa and cozy sweater!), close your eyes and whisper your "good byes" to Summer 2010. :)

À Bientôt, Europe---

This is the last post about our European Adventure and I wanted to give my final thoughts. This holiday was memorable, to say the least. To be able to spend so much time with my daughter on this trip, to support something she has worked so hard for, made me incredibly proud.

The most memorable times were; the view from the Liszt Music School every morning and her face the first time she saw the Eiffel Tower. All our little sparkly Eiffel Towers that we make at KAZA....she "gets it" now. :)

(*These will be available again, at KAZA, for Christmas!*)

The last few days were spent just hanging at cafe's, shopping and enjoying our final days in beautiful Paris. We stopped by the Louvre for a few hours to see some brilliance up close.

"The Crowning Of Napoleon". This painting was ginormous and incredibly beautiful! Look at the people near it to get a sense of the scale--amazing!

It is surreal to see these paintings, in real life, in a pass-by setting. Each piece deserve hours of appreciating, but it was so overwhelming to try and wrap your brain around what you are actually seeing, it was truly impossible.

I had been before to the Louvre, but really wanted to show my daughter. When we initially entered the first room of Italian sculptures, she said, "let's take our time and really look at each piece in the museum slowly". Six hours later....and only seeing a fraction of the museum, we waved our little white flags, got some quiche and called it a day.

The ceilings were amazing!

We re-visited the twinkling Eiffel Tower on our last night and talked about everything we saw---

Good bye, Eiffel Tower. We loved watching you twinkle from our hotel room and hearing the accordion players at night.

Good bye, Mr. Accordion Player--you set the mood perfectly!

Good Bye, Pont Alexandre III--you are always the most beautiful bridge in Paris.

Good bye, cute & funky little cafe's (this one taken for LVS--beautiful mosaics!)

Good Bye, Parisian Flea Market (Marche Aux Puce)

Good bye, Street painters that wore baseball caps rather than the Parisian berets we had expected.

Good bye, Cathedrals--stay magnificent!

Bonjour faithful KAZA customers!

Busy, busy, busy these days in Paris!

This week we went on the Eiffel Tower (at night), Bateaux Mouche (boat ride on the River Seine) to see some beautiful architecture. We went to the Arc De Triumphe and then took a stroll down the Champs Elysees.

This, for me, was a KAZA trip down the Champs Elysees, actually.

I was looking at window displays, styles...trying to absorb as much as I could! I can honestly say that ruffles are HUGE here! Everything has ruffles! Ruffles and Roman-style sandles--ginormous in the European fashion world. Had I not been over my ruffle obsession, I may have collapsed on the ground and you would have heard about me on the news!-lol

Now maybe they have a Sworovski store in New York, but I have never seen one before. I was amazed by the crystal stairs! Talk about some major blingage!

We went to the Marche and of course I bought a few things (have you gone mad?!?)--

I wish I could have organized shipping things back, better. The prices were up and down. The Parisian Brocantes/Marche Aux Puce's of yesteryear have passed and most vendors know what people are there for. The pickings were slim, in this Marche, honestly--but I did score some very good finds. Some will go to KAZA, some will come home to mama. I will put a special tag on the ones from the Marche. :o)

I will be back to Paris though. Furniture is my focus next time---1000% (prices were better than smalls)! There are some very unique pieces that really need to come to KAZA.

On a food note, in Canada, my family always bought the pastry, Mille-Feuille (a thousand leaves) in little wrapped packets. Tasty, yeah....but the real ones are amazing!

I know...naughty food. But we climbed these today...

...and felt guilt-free on every bite!

Je Suis En Paris!!

Ok, we just arrived in Paris and well internet has not been great here (to say the least), but we have had such a good time and have taken a ton and two pictures!

Brocante/Marche Aux Puce are on weekends here---looking so forward to what I find (something without a picture of an Eiffel Tower on it please!-lol)

(*Gabriella, my daughter, had to take this picture--I got dizzy and almost fell on my butt when I tried to take it!....just keepin' it classy kids-lol. It does look a bit crooked though, eh?)

We shared a Croque Monsieur and a crepe au chocolat (c'est si bon!)

Tonight, going to visit the Eiffel Tower lit up--beautiful! :o)

Guten Tag, again, Faithful KAZA subscribers!

We have done alot of walking around today and were able to see some cool museums (Bauhaus Museum is only 3 minutes away and the AM Horn is just a short 15 minute walk!). The thing that I love about the Bauhaus movement is the innovative spirit these people had. Nothing around them could influence this futuristic vision--yet, somehow they were inspired; creating pieces, buildings, etc that would be considered futuristic in this day and age.

I have spent much of my time taking pictures of old front doors--which I am thinking will be for a series of cards. The colours and details are amazing!

I also found the most amazing light pendant in a boutique. I took it from the front door and thought the woman was going to throw a shoe at me-lol

Do you hear the "Alleluia" Choir? This thing is fabulous and ginormous!

And there are alot of antique shops. I have not found anything amazing yet though, honestly. Sometimes, everything looks the same, do you know what I mean? I am looking for something REALLY cool!

Like this street vendor that I mistook for a piece of art! I would like him as a KAZA window display, eh?

And of course, we had to try the pretzels!

When we went to the bakery (same bakery from yesterday's strudel), I heard someone talking in German and turned to see who it was. It was my daughter ordering the pretzels in German and answering the womans questions....in German! It did not take her long to figure out how to communicate. I am still pointing and grunting, trying to get my point across and she is out there yackin' away!

I am an old dawg, I guess.....

Bahhh! I've got her in France!

Rainy day in Weimar--

Today we visited some museums and went window shopping a bit in between classes. I love to see the style here. I can say, alot of black (I fit right in!) and everyone wears scarves no matter how hot it is. I tried it for one day and I think my neck lost 3 lbs (lol)--I think, for me, scarves will be a colder weather thing.

We went to a bakery and I tried my first Streudel. Yummier than I thought and not so sweet. I like the crispy bits on the top. I know...all this naughty food, right? Well, one thing is there seems to be no elevators here (lol)---so my butt is getting the workout! Actually at the school, we must walk up 3 (actually 6, in my opinion), then walk down 2 flights to get to the practice rooms. We do this several times per day.

I deserve...have earned this streudel (lol)-Besides...it was apple streudel.

Tonight, we are off to a concert and then a lecture on music theory.

Guten Tag, from Germany, Faithful KAZA subscribers!

WHEW! Finally I have internet!
Well, I have been here for several days now and have finally gotten myself into a routine; sleeping, eating...have found some favourite spots, etc. This has been quite the adventure so far.

I found a cute little antique shop chock full of goodies! The furniture is sooo inexpensive, I am going crazy trying to find a way to send it home without it costing me a mortgage pymnt! grrrrr!

We first stopped in Paris and then took a flight out to Germany. Once we were in Frankfurt, we were really surprised at how many people do not speak English or French! This has been the most difficult part for us, honestly. Very difficult to communicate. So, if you are ever coming to Germany and people tell you, "ahh...don't worry about it, everyone there speaks English", it is not true!-lol

Luckily, I had a wonderful customer let me borrow a German book for my trip. My nose has been glued to it since! Danke, sweet faithful customer (you know who you are!)

Now I am in Weimar sitting in the hotel Elephant (very nice, btw--overlooks the courtyards).

My daughter takes piano classes at the Liszt Music School, literally a 2 minute walk from the hotel. She has had 5 hour practice days, Master classes and I have sat through them all (oy!).

But, we still have gotten a chance to take in some of the local "knows".

First, Weimar is gorgeous...adorable! Like a postcard, honestly.

Our first day here, we went to the square and bought a bratwurst and pomme frite from a vendor (very clean, btw) and sat on the bench listening to a German man with a guitar, singing old German songs. We looked at each other and wanted to cry. It seriously has been picture perfect since getting here (other than internet access).

Breakfast is in the beautiful courtyard at the hotel and is delicious! Perfect weather....even when it is raining..it is still just perfect.

So, from now I will post every day until we get to Paris. As most of you know, David on my desk always looking fabulous. He has been with me since I was 13 years old and goes everywhere with me. Well, of course I could not bring him physically---(his big head would not fit on my carry-on!)So, I have made a "Flat David" and will be sharing the adventure with him, as well!

I was sitting at the shop today, writing my 17th "last-minute-things-to-do-before-we -leave-for-Europe" list and it dawned on me that KAZA's 3rd Birthday passed by, without any sort of mention on the blog! OY!

We have been a tad busy here at KAZA, as many of you already know. The Marche Aux Puce was incredibly fun, noisy, messy, slightly wacky--and aren't those the ingredients for an awesome event?

After the Marche, we took a week off for the triple C's (collapse, clean & collapse again)and came back refreshed from the extra Vitamin D! AND we are already organizing our next wonderful event!

Now, just because we were enjoying the triple C's, does not mean we did nothing all week. The truth be known, we were also hanging Artist, Peg Lipin's gorgeous artwork in preparation for her upcoming Art Reception!

A bit about Artist, Peg Lipin:

Why Do I Paint?

There’s only one answer – I have to. All the colors of the world, the wonders that we see every day……they all pull me in.
There is little to equal the transformation of blank canvas.
With each painting, I seek to put “life” itself, along with color into all my work.

My paintings and fabric work have hung in Bedford and Hooksett Libraries, in Concord coffee shops and banks, and in juried and non-juried exhibits in Manchester and Goffstown, NH.
I have done outdoor murals in Manchester, NH, and I am presently displayed with other artists in the “Traveling Panel Project” in the greater Manchester, NH area.

I have studied watercolor painting in Wake Forest, NC. In Manchester, NH, I studied colored pencil and silverpoint with Jeanne LaChance. I am presently taking classes with Kim Roth, an acrylic painter.

Now let's talk us some KAZA windows!

The first window is called, "Blushing Bride". It is sweet, stylish & sassy! The new generation of Brides are not going for typical white on white on white on white. They want soft muted colour palettes, eclectic design...simple, unfussy and oh so Bohemian!

To go with this theme, we worked with local Artisan, Mary from Earthway soap to create a line of "Blushing Bride" products. The perfect gift for an upcoming Bridal Shower, Rehearsal Dinner gifts for the Bridesmaids or just that little something between a mother and daughter on her special day. This line is gorgeous, smells amazing and is available at KAZA as a Limited Edition! From sugar scrubs to soaps to body sprays---this is a fabulous gift!

The next window is "Turkish Bazaar"---The rich colours, scents, flavours and textures of Turkey are breathtaking. In the Grande Bazaar,in Istanbul, there are stacks of rugs and kilims, ceramics and pottery...and nothing is planned or designed visually, to merchandise their products. It is simply beautiful. Baklava, anyone?

*speaking of Baklava--we went to South Street Market in Concord and oh my goshhhhh---amazingly good baklava! Leave some for us though, eh?

KAZA's music for the month has been Paris Combo! (Love them!)

A few people came into the shop and said they saw us mentioned in New Hampshire Magazine as one of the Best of 2010. I had not seen it yet, but did a bit of research and was so happy to see the nice things that were written (thanks LB!):

KAZA's Premiere Annual Marche Aux Puce is finished!

I wanted to thank you, sweet faithful KAZA customers for coming to our first Marche Aux Puce and making it so much fun!

I honestly never expected such a great turn-out. For me, it was like a big party with friends. People were bumping into each other, laughing and having a good time. It was noisy and messy and such a great and crazy experience. The thing that touched me was how people were excited about this Marche. I was excited---and you got it. You understood, accepted it and also became excited.

We are totally making this a yearly event!

And I learned alot of things:
1. Next year, hire help!!
2. You guys are a bunch of crazy shoppers! I will need to organize better and bring even more stuff!
3. FOOD! I forgot to feed y'all!
4. You guys are crazy shoppers....did I mention that already?

With everything that sold, it made us realize it is a perfect time to reconfigure the shop again! How refreshing! With that in mind, I will be taking some time off next week to organize my brain and plan. SO excited about the changes to come!

Here Comes The Sun (doo doo doo doo)....

Oh, how I love the sun!

I am beginning to realize how I am a "sun" person. I know, I know....Canadian blood not loving winter? "She said whaaat?"

My "V-8" moment was actually last September. I was sitting in the back garden, looking at the clear night sky while eating strawberries with my daughter. There was a soft breeze and I was thinking of how much I loved to be there, in that moment.

Being a small business owner, my mind only stayed in that moment for just that....a moment, before I was thinking of Christmas inventory (blghghghg...patooey!). I love Christmas, don't get me wrong. I just don't like to think of it so early. Suddenly, I became sad. I realized that it would be cold soon and I would be cooped up inside for another 6 months. At that moment, in all of my thirty-something years of life, I decided....winter sucks (please forgive my gnarly language).

But here...today...right now..."the sun is shining, the weather is sweet, yeah" (to quote the great Finley Quaye). I am sunburned, the garden is in, I feel amazing and I am going to enjoy every second!

ok...enough about me, lets talk us some KAZA!

This is our very first Marche Aux Puce, here at KAZA! What is it all about, you ask? Well, alot of people ask to go see our warehouse, but we cannot do that for insurance reasons and that would be spilling all our beans, now wouldn't it? So, for this one week (MONDAY 14 June-SATURDAY, 19 June)we are bringing random (and fabulous) pieces to KAZA. It will all be about furniture, honestly---I will not be staging things or creating any type of vignettes or anything (unless, of course, I cannot stop myself-lol)--it will just be furniture, furniture, furniture. Funky furniture, Industrial Farmhouse Furniture, International Furniture, lamp bases, old trunks/suitcases, mirrors, old antique crusty doors, old ornate frames, garden spheres, etc... Since KAZA is such a tiny shop, we can obviously fit only so much, so we will be bringing in new pieces daily. But, I will say, if there is something you like, don't hesitate. We have added almost 100 new names to our mailing list, since mentioning the Marche.

*VERY IMPORTANT: The postcard, that is mailed out, has a 20% off coupon on it. Please stop in next week, to pick one up, if you are not on the physical mailing list (located at the cash desk).

As most of you know, we will be gone to Europe in August and will be closed for most of the month. Still unsure if hiring someone to keep the shop open while we are gone is a better idea. I will keep you posted on that.

Holy Guacamole, right?!?

Last Saturday, I received a packet in the mail from New Hampshire Magazine. I thought,"Cool, they sent me a magazine!". When I opened the packet, my jaw dropped and I started crying (oy! I am such a girl!). Honestly, I was so incredibly, deeply touched. After almost 3 years of KAZA being open and all the hard work---to be recognized for it, was such an amazing feeling.

KAZA was chosen as "Editors Pick for Shabby Chic Revival" and will be inside the July issue of New Hampshire Magazine!

Do you know what this means?!?
It means, you have been shopping in a pretty cool shop! ;oP

In all honesty, KAZA could never be KAZA without you, Sweet Faithful Subscribers. You are so supportive and accepting of our kooky side and we appreciate you so much! So, these honours are for you too! Soak it up, baby! :o)

My head is spinning!

First off, the Sharon Cloud Trunk Show went incredibly well---was a huge success and I also learned alot. Sharon is a genius. It's that simple. Everything this woman touches, is fabulous. I need about 10 Sharon Cloud's; One for French Moutarde (the BEST mustard I have ever had in my thirty-something years of life), lavender bundles, botanicals, parfum, textiles, pillows, bees wax, honey, etc...

She brought in a second batch of moutarde 2 days ago and it has already sold out! It is amazing stuff! (The lonely one on the picture has been spoken for by a phone order). But don't worry, I am on it! I have left a message for more. :o)

Last night was so much fun! KAZA had an Art Reception for McGowan's Artist, Barbara Carr and what a great turn out it was!

Barbara made homemade Tapenade (both green and black olive) and it smelled amazing. No, the show was not about Tapenade, sillies, but it made a strong impression (the shop still smelled fabulous, this morning!). Barbara is an incredible talent and I love having her here.

During the reception, we had models in the front windows wearing vintage Haute Couture, courtesy of Arnie Arneson. If you read a couple of posts prior to this one, you will read all about her aunt, the original owner of these gorgeous pieces. It is a fascinating story and makes me appreciate them even more.

The models....they did an amazing job. I, literally, had goosebumps and was so incredibly proud. They were both gorgeous and their professionalism floored me. The fabulous Parisian backdrops were done by Barbara Carr, btw!

In the first scene, we had Moulin Rouge; recently slipcovered chaise, vintage light fixtures which came from an old 1920's restaurant, Paper windows Treatments (hey, it's KAZA! Who else would mix paper drapes with vintage Haute Couture?), the amazing gownssssssss and Model, Katherine Rivard (she was breathtaking!). This window was incredible.

Model, Victoria Grabowski was in the Parisian Bistro Window. She looked beyond fabulous! Reading the French newspaper, "Le Monde" and wearing vintage Pucci...ooh-la-la!

On a design note, I added the paper drapes because I really thought it was important for people to look "in" the windows, rather than look "at" the windows. That extra layer really gives it another dimension, allowing the onlookers to feel separated and transported to a very different environment and era.

I am still smiling....what a great event!

Btw, I just learned how to do collages, as you probably have realized at this point-lol-let me know if it is more annoying, than good. There was so much to talk about and I had "a ton & two" pictures I wanted to share with all of you and thought this was a good way to do it. All the jewelry artists have brought in more gorgeous pieces! Btw, Did you know one of our Jewelry Artists, Kitty Stoykovich was featured on Art In Focus, Concord TV?(click here to watch the interview!) She mentioned KAZA too! (Thanks Kitty!)

Also, reordered lavender smoke bundles already! Lavender smoke bundles: Drop 2-3 lavender stems in water for 20 minutes than put them on the grill along with your favourite veggie or meat and voila! Suddenly you are a gourmet! (150 stem bundles for 5$)

I have also brought in some greeting cards with pictures of Paris. What an amazing talent! An incredible eye! ...ok ok, blah blah, I took them :oP (hee hee)

Honestly, you really cannot go wrong taking pictures in Paris---everything looks like art!

Ahhh...the music! Everyone has been asking about this music!

Yann Teirsen is the featured music at KAZA for the month of May! Love it!

And now for being so patient and reading this whole post, I will reward you chère faithful subscribers with some inside info--a sort of "heads up!", if you will:

As you know, KAZA closes on Saturdays, starting 5 June until September.

It's not official yet, BUT! 15 June 2010-19 June 2010, KAZA will be having a "Marche Aux Puce" or a sort of Market Day (week long, actually--but it doesn't sound as good calling it Market Week, eh?). So, I thought we would do something special and have a "Marche Aux Puce". So, what does this mean?? For the week of "KAZA's Marche Aux Puce", we will be emptying out our warehouse (probably half of it, anyway) to make room for new stuff and will be bringing it HERE for a week long event! It will be 90% furniture (no smalls) and more will be brought in daily. But once something is gone, it is gone. AND!!! The furniture will be 20% off the ticketed price! Changing windows tonight for tomorrow's Art Reception for Barbara Carr!

The models have been chosen. Vintage Haute Couture, chosen & fitted. Pieces for the windows, ready. Barbara Carr Artwork, delivered. Hair Salon Appointments for the models, scheduled....this is going to be a great event!

A tiny glimpse of this amazing gown!

A bit of history on these fabulous pieces of vintage Haute Couture(taken from The Hippo Press, per Arnie's permission):

Before the struggle for equal work opportunities for women took off, Johanna Tatle Reiss was leading Grand Circle Travel in New York, serving as CEO from about the late 1950s to early 1970s. Reiss dressed to denote her power with a wardrobe from top design houses including Pucci, Oscar de la Renta, Valentino and Yves Saint Laurent. “She didn’t want to look like a man. She wanted to look like a women. She wanted to walk into a room and have everyone know she was the CEO and not the secretary,” said Arnie Arnesen, Reiss’ neice.

When Reiss was 90 years old, Arnesen became her guardian and, in the process of moving her from France back to the U.S., found a collection of clothing from someone who knew how to have fun and also have a commanding presence in a boardroom, Arnesen said.Reiss’ best friend was Muriel Siebert, the first woman to buy a seat on the New York Stock Exchange. They “not only broke through the glass ceiling ... but managed to dominate in their fields,” Arnesen said.

Reiss retired to Cannes at 55. She’d been married several times and had no children. She was married to work. She was always more successful than her husbands, which was part of the reason her marriages didn’t work out, Arnesen said. It was hard for a man to be married to a powerful women at the time, Arnesen said. Arnesen was the first woman on a major party ticket to run for governor in New Hampshire and is known for hosting talk radio and her other involvement in media and politics. Reiss was a role model to Arnesen, yet, “I didn’t know my aunt at all because she was so successful and so in another world,” Arnesen said. Once a year, Reiss’ limousine would pull up at Arnesen’s grandparents’ home in Hicksville, Long Island; Arnesen remembers seeing the chauffeur leaning against the limo smoking cigarettes during Reiss’ four hour visits. Reiss was penniless by the time Arnesen became her guardian.

Barbara Carr also painted the backdrops to help us set the tone for the Parisian scenes for the models!

(Hint!) One side is Moulin Rouge. The other, the Eiffel Tower (and yes, Vintage Pucci will be worn!)

Oh, Faithful Blog Subscribers, we have some big things coming up at KAZA!

The Artist is preparing her pieces. The window displays are planned. The models have been chosen. The Vintage Haute Couture fittings are next week.

This is going to be a fabulous reception!

"Spring", an Art Reception for Artist, Barbara Carr is set for 13 May 2010 at KAZA!

The night of the reception will feature models in the window (Living Window Displays) wearing vintage haute couture, courtesy of Arnie Arneson. The story behind the clothes is fascinating and I will explain a bit more about that, once I get the whole & accurate scoop from Arnie.

Just so you know, I saw the Vintage Haute Couture pieces that Arnie has and nearly cried. Not just a sweet lady-like cry. I am talking a mouth wide open-wailing-eyes tightly closed-gasping for air-embarrassing kind of cry. I have been reading Vogue Magazine since I was 12 years old and touching these clothes was like a dream come true, for me. (Now, all I have to do is meet Simon LeBon from Duran Duran and all my childhoods dreams will have come true completely-lol)

Now, the name Barbara Carr may sound familiar to you. She is a McGowens artist and has also been featured at KAZA 2 years ago (remember her gorgeous wood cut prints?)

Barbara Carr is a BFA graduate of Massachusetts College of Art, where she majored in painting and drawing. In addition, she studied figure drawing at the Slade School in London. Carr has also studied with Joseph L. C. Santoro, King Coffin, Ron Bowen and Philip Morse. Her main medium is oil, but she also enjoys painting in acrylic and pastel, drawing in charcoal and making fine art prints, particularly woodcuts. She has traveled a bit, but still finds many of her favorite subjects in New England.

What I personally love about Barbara is how adorable, authentic and charming she is and how her creative wheels are always turning--you can see it in her eyes. She is creative to the soul. I love that.

The reception with the artist, which includes the 4 hour living window display, will be on 13 May 2010 from 4pm-7pm.

Happy thoughts! Happy thoughts! Ignore the snow on your windshield this morning--it is just a test to see if we are truly ready for warm and yummy sunshine.

This morning a customer came in and told me she had a sunburn from yesterday and woke up to find snow on her car. "It's New Hampshire" she said, shrugging off any suggestion of shock and irritation. Yes...this New Hampshire weather has quite the sense of humour, eh?

OK! Let's talk KAZA!

We just finished up a window last night and there is something about it that makes me so happy. It is youthful, fun and charming (with always a bit of KAZA Kookiness). I call the window, "Little Mod Riding Hood". The yellow chair is simply gorgeous. I love the combination of the formal chair, the fabulously upcycled vintage tiered table and Aida looking especially "Little Red Riding Hood" with her red, vintage raw silk ruffle.

Those round circles on the wall? Embroidery hoops, of course! Just a few swatches of your favourite coordinating fabrics and a few inexpensive embroidery hoops (in different sizes) can tie a funky room together and can be changed any time you want (especially good for the commitment phobe).

The Danish Modern Chair has been recently reupholstered in a crisp bleached white duck fabric (which is completely removable and machine washable).

The glass terrarium is actually a funnel turned upside down (ala Matthew Meade's Seminar at Company C, last month!). I finally got a chance to meet him and thank him in person for being so great at spreading word about KAZA, when we first opened the shop almost 3 years ago. He is incredibly sweet and down-to-earth and his new magazine, "Flea Market Style" is a must have! My copy is full of coloured tabs of all his great ideas!

The antique secretary was revamped with a soft baby blue paint, yellow ceramic and bronze knobs and a vintage map backsplash.

"Maps?", you say? Well, yes. I am, at this very moment, obsessed with them. Well, ruffles had me all gooey for so long --but after making all those ruffled pillows and the stress of keeping up with orders, I had to find a new obsession (I couldn't look at a ruffle for weeks!). So...maps...ahhh...vintage maps, is my new obsession! Paper chains in the window? Maps...

I love this CD---it is mostly in Hebrew and I don't understand anything, but it is beautiful. Interior Design student, Vicky Frazier had let me borrow a CD last year and Yael Naim was on it and I have loved her music ever since. (Mucho gusto, Vicky!)

Actually, I mentioned Vicky was an Interior Design Student, but as of tomorrow, she will be a Graduate! Other students that have helped us with our window displays, that are graduating on Saturday from NHIA are: Cyndi Rogers, Sherry Burnett, Janet Prisk & Ellie Davis!

Spring Is Coming!

I know, after last weeks "snow-icane", being without power, having to clean the trees on our front (and back!) gardens... it is hard to see the signs of Spring, right?

Rested & Re-Energized

After more than 2 1/2 years of being open, I decided to take a Winter Hiatus, last week. It was unexpected, but I was fighting something since Christmas and realized I just needed to let myself rest. I was going to write on the blog, while in my jammies, but decided to not do anything "KAZA". I did, however, become a "Reality TV Junkie".

It all started with Chef Academy...then I moved onto Project Runway...then I found "Launch My Line" (wasn't that brown haired girl grumpy??)....then I became desperate and started to delve deep into the darkest places of reality tv and found "Jersey Shore". I learned all about "the situation" and Schnookie and realized how long one week can be, when staying in my pjs. It was time for me to go back to work!

When I walked through the doors on Tuesday morning, I realized what a cute little shop, KAZA is. Sometimes it takes a week away to appreciate what we have. This week has been extremely busy and I feel refreshed! I love the new inventory and am excited about what is coming up next (ohhhhh....do we have some good ones!).

Ok....now, down to business:

Do you own a KAZA cutting board, yet? Well, you should, they are gorgeous! We started with the Natural Edge Birds Eye Maple and have now included Natural Edge Cherry in our inventory of cutting boards.

Sharon Cloud came in the other day and dropped off some of her, "Green Gold". Well, I had never heard of it, honestly, but then a customer came in after her and said, "Ohhhhhh, is this Sharon Cloud's Green Gold???" and she is right to be excited!
Green Gold is for problems of the skin; burns, bites, wounds, rashes, etc.

Made from Olive Oil, Comfrey, Calendula, Plantain, Golden Seal and Beeswax--
Fabulous stuff & great for the "winter dry's" (12$ for a 2oz jar).

Another thing to beat the "winter dry's" is KAZA's own organic facial steam!
Walking the fields of my families estate in Coaticook, Canada-we picked fresh wild mint, clover and raspberry leaves and organically grown rosemary and lavender. People that have used our facial steams come back for it every year! It feels amazing and is a spa treatment, in your own home.

The windows, you ask?

Well, ok....

The first one is "Mad Men" inspired.

Artist, Barbara Carr mentioned how it looked like a High-End European Hotel Lobby (I like those!). I love it because it is simple, but tells a story. The plaid brown and blue textile is gorgeously masculine (metrosexual, actually). When combined with the ruffled pillows, Vintage lamp (there is a sister, btw), vintage camera, an old service bell and one of our "glass of milk at the beach" candles, this window became one of my absolute favourites.

Window II is Gustavian / Old European Farmhouse inspired:

I love the old door with the Sharon Cloud dish towel hanging on it! The creme wing back chair was in our warehouse all wrapped up and mummified and I had forgotten it was even there. We added spots of red to show a little Valentine love.

For me, my favourite part of this window are the rolls of old maps in the drawer. It reminds me of Albert Finney's Scrooge when, on Christmas Day, he was throwing rolls of blueprints, up in the air because he was so happy. I always loved those rolls as a kid and wanted a stack of my own.

And yes, before they went in the window, I threw them up in the air first-lol (are you kidding? I couldn't resist!)

A Russian In Paris.....

I have had some conversations with some of you regarding my love for ruffles. Not just a surface, "Oh, I really like ruffles" kind of chit chat. I am talking about my soul baring LOVE for ruffles. I even wrote about it in the KAZA Loves Design! blog.

Remember Carrie Bradshaws’ dress (final season of Sex in the City) when she was in Paris, waiting for the Russian? I seriously think I fainted the first time I saw it. It still makes me gasp during re-runs. Exquisite. That dress was Haute Couture Versace and I cannot get it out of my soul.

So....what's a girl to do?

Make a pillow!

Actually, several and offer them up to our wonderful and faithful KAZA customers to purchase, display on their bed and dream of wearing that exquisite gown. (TIP: if you lie your head next to the pillow and sort of glance on the side, it will actually feel like you are lying in the sea of Versace ruffles) Ahhhh.....a sea of ruffles--what a beautiful thought.

I don't typically spill inventory beans early, but I had to post these fast (4 sold yesterday) and are limited quantity.

Wishing Peace & Funkiness for 2010

According to Google, there are 31,556,926 seconds in a year.

When I entered my 30's, it dawned on me that there are no "do overs" in life. I also realized how life doesn't really slow down for anyone to take a moment to synchronize our brain to catch up with the speed of life, erase mistakes or to do, say or react something over again. Kind of a bummer.

To take 300 uninterrupted, fully focused seconds of my life to hear my daughter talk about her dream or a funny story, sometimes seems impossible. But, as I look at her little face--I also know time does not slow down for her either and soon I will wish she would come home for those 300 seconds to just chat and tell me her dreams again.

To take 300 uninterrupted, fully focused seconds of my life and call my parents or my sister and not think about work or the shops inventory and window changes or the laundry that has to be done--because time does not slow down for them either and I know one day, I will wish for their words of wisdom after a difficult day.

I know this post seems like, kind of a downer--but for me, New Years is the one day that we can start fresh. So, I wanted to offer a suggestion for your New Years Resolution, this year, if I may:

We may not be able to get back the former 31,556,926 seconds, but we have a new 31,556,926 seconds to take and divide up, where it counts.

So, Bonne Annee 2010!
A toast to good health, happy heads and to hoping the next 31,556,926 seconds are the best yet!

The weather has been so nice, sunny and warm-- We've, sort of, dragged our feet to transform the shop for Christmas, until it was right under our nose! The last few weeks of making inventory, planning windows, changing my mind on windows (sorry Cyndi!) and changing the shop around, has been a whirlwind.

We laughed.

I love smelling good while going to bed-- especially if I am wearing new pjs (that is the best!). It is a tradition in my family for the women to receive new pjs every Christmas (Merci, Maman! xox)

These pillows are fabulous! Cyndi Rogers of Mariposa Interior Designs and I talked alot about pillow designs and what I wanted at the shop for this season. She created these pillows and I absolutely, roll-on-the-floor love them!

We also wanted to add a bit for Hanukkah. Actually the cards shown are made by a young girl named Sarah. She is 12 years old and is extremely talented, focused and a true entrepreneur! Her gorgeous holiday cards are 4$ each and she even takes orders for larger quantities.

The Peppermint Sticks did so well last year, we decided to bring them back in packets of 3/7,50$ (add them to your centrepiece, wreath or Christmas tree!)

Without being able to have you all over for Thanksgiving, I thought I would share a bit of our Canadian Thanksgiving Table with you!

Recipe for French Canadian Tourtiere:

2 lbs of Ground Hamburg
1 lb of Ground Pork
1 whole onion
Nutmeg
Cloves
Cinnamon
Black Pepper
Cardamom
Saltines
2 pie crusts

In a large pot, on low heat, combine hamburg and pork and cook while mixing together, until no longer pink.

Keep on low heat for another 15-20 minutes, stirring every few minutes.
(chop onions finely and crush two packets of saltines finely, in between stirrings)

Close heat completely and add finely chopped onions and mix in.

Add a 1/2 Tbsp of each nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom & cloves and a dusting of black pepper. Stir together.

Add crushed saltines and mix into meat. Taste and adjust spices to your liking (be careful with the clove--it is a very strong flavour).

Spoon in filling onto two 9" pie crusts and cover with a pie crust top. Trim and flute. Brush pie crust with one mixed egg and milk combination.

Bake at 400°F for 20 minutes (or until golden brown)

Voila!

*Serve with ketchup

SteamPunk:
Influenced by the visions of HG Wells, Steampunk (in a nutshell)is turn of the century inventions in trying to create modern technology with 19th century materials. Clunky gears and wheels, before micro-technology was invented.

We have added gears and wire...folded pages from old books (and of course KAZA Eiffel Towers!)and an old ornate frame to display these utensils of technology as Art.

When I mentioned a bicycle chain chandelier to Cyndi Rogers, she ran with it and created a jaw dropping piece of art! And yes, it is for sale (inquire within).

The other window is still a work in progress, but we will post as soon as it is completed! :o)
